Cancelled Trains, 37°C Heat, and Well-Deserved Waffles
Team Orange’s Blog: After an eventful first day, it was time to pack up and leave Brussels behind, on our massive 650km travel day across Europe!
Breakfast & Plan B
Every good expedition requires flexibility, and the team had to put that to the test first thing this morning.
“Today we started with an extensive breakfast of bread, jam, and fruit. We then found out the news that one of our trains was cancelled. Luckily ‘Dan the man with a plan’ dashed off to figure it out and get us back on track.”
Liège to Cologne: Lost in Translation
The journey gave everyone a chance to rest up and mingle with the locals, with varying degrees of success!
“We got on the train, got settled, to Liège. We made some friends with some old ladies and Maiko made good use of google translate to talk to them with a an English accent. We got off the train and made a dash to the other platform for a quick transfer to the train bound for Cologne.”
After the mad dash in Liège, the team got to take in some incredible sights in Germany.
“We arrived in Cologne and were greeted with the sight of a massive cathedral and an even more massive bridge we had to cross to get to the other station. We waited for another delayed train and got on and eventually everyone found a seat for the final train of the day.”
The Heat is On
The trains might have tested our patience today, but we finally reached our destination: Nuremberg! However, getting to our spectacular castle hostel required one last push.
“When we got to Nuremberg, we had an uphill 20 minute walk ahead us in 37 degrees but made through it. In total we travelled over 650km. We finished the day with free time walking around Nuremberg and got some well deserved waffles.”
A huge well done to the whole team for powering through the heat, the heavy bags, and the travel delays. We can safely say those waffles were earned!
