Lake Days, Bobsleigh Slides, and Austrian Wrestling
Team Pink: With the Austrian heatwave in full swing, the Explorers made the very wise decision to do some R&R and soak up the local camp life.
Lie-ins and ‘Speck‘
After a jam-packed week, the fatigue was definitely starting to set in, but a good breakfast always cures the expedition exhaustion.
“We had a relaxing morning with an undefined wake up time; before moving to the kitchen to eat the prepared scrambled eggs and traditional ‘speck’ all inside a bread roll and coated in ketchup. (Leaders Edit – post Zombie Apocalypse this morning! 😂)“
Waterslides and Beaches
The team took full advantage of the glorious weather and headed off-site for a proper beach day.
“The unanimous vote was for a relaxed no-travel day. So we took a leisurely late morning stroll towards a nearby lifeguarded lake bathing beach which allowed us to; swim, use their jumping platforms and inflatables. Lunch brought a feast of various breads, hams, cheeses, and pastries before then a group of ‘incredibly mature’ boys took a bobsleigh style trip down the slide trying their best to hold onto each other.”
Beating the Heat
A 31-degree walk back to camp meant the leaders had to step in with some essential, if slightly unpopular, rehydration drinks.
“After a baking 31 degree walk back we spent the afternoon cooling off in the shade with iced lollies dishes out by the leaders along with “tasty” mandatory rehydration salt drinks before dining upon our 3rd meal of pasta on the trip plus lots of cake to finish.”
The Despair of the Leaders
The absolute highlight of the day was an impromptu cultural exchange that gave the leadership team a few extra grey hairs.
“The later evening then entailed a traditional Austrian Game centred around holding others to the ground. With only minor injuries around. (Leaders Edit – 😭 injury forms duly prepared and Austrian Leaders also holding their heads in their hands about their scouts introducing ours to this beloved/despaired of game!).“
Once the dust had settled and the injury forms were safely packed away, the Explorers got back to their usual duties.
“Lots of necker trading with Austrian scouts and doing our campsite duty roster – cleaning of the toilets and shower blocks.”
Sleeping Under the Stars
With the tents feeling a bit too stuffy in the summer heat, the team got creative for their final night’s sleep.
“Later, we all decided to leave our tents and sleep upon the raised central platform on the camp. The floor might have been hard but most enjoyed the cool that came from not being cooped up in the tent.”
